Anchorman 2 Might Happen, It Just Needs a Studio Greenlight

Ever since Anchorman came out in 2004, there have been rumors of a sequel. Our last update was back in 2008 and even back then it didn’t seem like it would ever happen. However, after years of waiting, director Adam McKay told MTV that everyone is on-board (from Applegate to Carell to Rudd) for Anchorman 2 and now they’re just waiting for a greenlight and money from Paramount before taking the next step. “It’s a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone’s prices went up… But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do [the sequel].”

McKay goes on to say that ideally they’re hoping to start shooting by February of 2011, but that’s still a big “if“, since they need to polish the script and get Paramount to agree to a bigger budget. “We had an idea and we contacted Steve and Paul and [David] Koechner and Christina [Applegate] and checked in with everyone and they were all game for it,” he says. So what is the idea? Well, we’ll just let McKay himself explain more:

“That’s loosely what the idea is,” McKay said. “[The '80s angle is] more the frame of it. We have this other, bigger, crazier idea that’s really more what it’s about, which I can’t say. Our thinking was there’s just no way the second one is going to be as good as the first, because the first one is the first one. So our idea is if we’re going to do a second one, we better go for it and try some insane stuff and we’ll be enjoying it and that way it can’t be half bad.”

That definitely does sound like it could be pretty crazy, but that’s exactly what I love about the “first” movie. Anchorman is one of my all-time favorite comedies that I don’t think any other comedy in recent years has even come close to matching. That movie also had its fair share of insanity, like when they had a giant studio battle and fought each other with medieval weapons. Who the hell puts that kind of stuff in their movie and can actually make it funny?! Anyway, this doesn’t mean Anchorman 2 is happening yet, but it sounds like they’re one step closer to pulling it off. Maybe if Paramount gets a sense that fans want a sequel, they’ll be more willing to give it the go-ahead. So how many of you do want to actually see Anchorman 2?
