From Office to Screen: The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie

Mindy Kaling

The writing staff behind NBC’s hit comedy TV series “The Office” is chock full of talent. Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (currently hard at work on Ghostbusters 3) are just a few of the writers who have snagged big projects because of their work on the show. Now Variety reports that co-writers Brent Forrester and Mindy Kaling (who also plays Kelly Kapoor as seen above) are jumping to feature films with The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie – the story of a woman whose lack of self-worth has limited her choice in men to losers until her life takes an unexpected turn when she is pursued by the hottest guy ever. Along with Mandate Pictures, producing the film will be fellow actor John Malkovich and his Mr. Mudd production label as well as the team behind 2007’s indie hit Juno. Nathan Kahane from Mandate is a big proponent of Kaling and Forrester’s writing talents as “the most comically endowed writers out there.” If anything I’m interested in this project simply because of the lack of strong comedic roles for females in the industry today. Kaling’s work on “The Office” is proof that she’s got a genuine comedic eye and will bring some fresh female perspective to the male dominated comedy world. We’ll keep our eyes on this project.
