James Marsden and Russell Brand Join the Comedy ‘I Hop’
No, there isn’t a food service comedy poking fun at the International House of Pancakes on the way. THR’s report refers to James Marsden and Russell Brand joining I Hop, a live-action/CGI hybrid comedy that follows Fred (Marsden) an out-of-work slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Brand) and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world’s worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up. Directed by Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks), this sounds like another Kangaroo Jack waiting to happen but with writer Brian Lynch involved, I can’t help but be interested.
Lynch (who has also worked on Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots) is quite the comedic talent on the page (you can see great evidence of this via his Twitter). He wrote the script with Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio (who both wrote Horton Hears a Who and Dinner for Schmucks), so while I would normally dismiss a concept like this, their involvement is certainly intriguing. Honestly though, I would almost prefer going back to the old school blend of live action and animation in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit or the grittier Cool World. The CG characters don’t offer anymore realism since the characters are made to be completely unbelievable. Anyway, I hope the talent behind the script means this won’t be a painful comedy to endure.
