Johnny Depp Directing Documentary About Keith Richards

Johnny Depp & Keith Richards

Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean fame is now quite the iconic swashbuckler, and while the character is a fine performance by Johnny Depp, the actor revealed his inspiration for crafting the drunk pirate lied within Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. So it only made sense for the British rocker to appear as Captain Jack’s father in At World’s End. Now we can add another link in this strange chain as The Playlist reports Depp will direct a documentary chronicling Richards’ life combining all-new coverage with archival footage from newsreels and concerts of many decades past. Sex, drugs, and rock & roll assemble!

Depp said his editor was already hard at work going through “kilometers of archive footage” and he was very “touched that Keith agreed to show up in front of my cameras.” This will be the actor’s second time sitting in the director’s chair as he directed and starred in the 1997 film The Brave with Marlon Brando. However, it remains to be seen if Depp has talent behind the camera since that first effort only saw festival releases at Cannes and TIFF, and received enough of a bad reception to prevent it from ever getting US distribution (though apparently the film can be purchased at Amazon UK if you’re actually interested in checking it out).

With the amount of love Depp has for Richards, and a twelve-year growth period for the actor to learn from talented directors like Gore Verbinksi (Pirates of the Caribbean), Tim Burton (ridiculous amounts of Depp’s films), and Marc Forster (Finding Neverland), this will definitely be a labor of love and a project worth looking forward to seeing soon. Of course, documentary’s can take some time to film and take shape, so who knows when this will get released. We will be on the lookout for more news on this developing documentary.
