Josh Duhamel & Samuel Jackson Have ‘Sympathy for the Devil’

After director Boaz Yakin pleased fans of the “inspirational sports movie” genre with Disney’s Remember the Titans, he unfortunately followed it up with Uptown Girls. That was six years ago. Since then Yakin has only directed Death in Love, which hasn’t garnered a lot of good press despite showing at Sundance last year. However, things might be looking up for the director as Latino Review has learned that the director is in early pre-production on Sympathy for the Devil, a violent, pulp fiction kind of story with Samuel L. Jackson & Josh Duhamel playing humans who have to navigate a battle between heaven and hell. Sold!

Though it’s still pretty early on, we can’t help but get quite excited from the official synopsis for the film:

Caught in the no-man’s land between Saturday night sin and Sunday morning redemption, Louisiana lawman Harlan Stark (Duhamel) finds that his intervention into a spectacular crime – the bold attempt to assassinate a charismatic preacher — sooner escalates into a cosmic confrontation between Heaven and Hell, where angels are warriros as dangerous as demons. Harlan and his loyal partner Jesse (Jackson) stand at the fulcrum between vengeful good and devious evil, with neither side showing anything like mercy.

Sounds like an interesting mix of Pulp Fiction and Legion with just a little bit of Constantine, which is just enough crazy to get me pumped. Jackson always has fun with roles like this, and it will be very interesting to see Duhamel cut loose after breaking away from romantic comedies and showing his action chops in the Transformers franchise. The script is already locked and it sounds like the film just needs to get a grasp on international distribution and DVD rights to close the deal and get under way. The sooner the better! We’ll be keeping our eye on this one, as it definitely has lots of promise. Anyone else pumped for this movie?
