It was just over a month ago that director Rob Marshall was confirmed as the director of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. However, when Disney had a bit of a shake-up with chairman Dick Cook (the man who really got the right people excited about Pirates to begin with) stepping down after 38 years, that left Johnny Depp a little less enthusiastic about a return to the high seas. It sounds like not much has changed as ComingSoon caught up with Marshall recently and he sounds none too firm on the sequel, but isn’t that worried about it.

Though the concept of the story itself is confirmed, it doesn’t sound like that much else has been solidified in its development so far. Marshall says:

“We’re still trying to figure out if it’s going to all happen. If it happens–I think Johnny’s doing [The Tourist] with Angelina Jolie in the spring so if it happens, we’ll start in the summer, and we’ll see. I’m excited. If it happens, it happens. I’d be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I’m excited about the genre.”

It doesn’t instill much confidence when Marshall says: “I would need to see a script first.” Disney wants this film off the ground in six months and there isn’t even a first draft of the script done yet. I don’t care if they have a novel as source material this time, that’s just careless and foolish on Disney’s part. Russ from SlashFilm points out that “if they’ve got a script two weeks ahead of time they’ll be doing better than Pirates 3.” Well unfortunately Pirates 3 was rubbish in my opinion and if this is less prepared then that nonsense ridden installment, then count me out. Disney better step it up and not just phone it in this time. The Curse of the Black Pearl was such a fantastic action adventure movie, and I’d like to see that magic back on screen.
