‘The King’s Speech’ is Best Picture 2011 Academy Awards

$3.4 Billion in Free Scholarships.

Each year, Hollywood’s schedule more or less culminates with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handing out Oscars for the year’s best films and Sunday, for the 83rd straight time, it happens again. Hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway helped some of the most famous actors and actresses in the world hand out the hardware for the best of 2010 it was telecast live from the historic Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Franco and Hathaway kicked off the show by making their way through several Best Picture nominees like Inception with special guests like Alec Baldwin, one of last year’s hosts. I thought this year’s ceremony went rather smoothly since the idea behind Hathaway and Franco’s hosting duties was to bring a sense of youth to the show i think they did a great job.

Read on for the complete list of nominees and winners. Be sure to let us know what you think of the results!  Winners are highlighted in BOLD below.

PICTURE:
Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are All Right
Winner! The King’s Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter’s Bone

Thoughts: Within the last few weeks, I was starting to jump on The Social Network bandwagon, I wanted it to win. But here’s the truth – I really love both The King’s Speech and The Social Network, almost equally. But I knew TKS would win the moment I first saw it and it did. Yes, it plays right to the Academy, but I knew that when I walked out. It’s a fantastic film, both of them are – I would’ve been happy with either winning.

DIRECTOR:
Darren Aronofsky – Black Swan
David Fincher – The Social Network
Winner! Tom Hooper – The King’s Speech
Joel & Ethan Coen – True Grit
David O. Russell – The Fighter

Thoughts: You know, I loved The King’s Speech and I should be totally happy, but this is a weird category. All great guys and it’s a tough year to decide, but it looks like the Academy is swaying towards TKS this time.

ACTOR:
Javier Bardem – Biutiful
Jeff BridgesTrue Grit
Jesse Eisenberg – The Social Network
Winner! Colin Firth – The King’s Speech
James Franco – 127 Hours

Thoughts: Yep, I knew it. The moment I walked out of The King’s Speech last September, I proclaimed that Colin Firth would win the Oscar. It’s now five months later and that prediction has come true. Deserves it!

ACTRESS:
Annette Bening – The Kids Are All Right
Nicole Kidman – Rabbit Hole
Jennifer Lawrence – Winter’s Bone
Winner! Natalie PortmanBlack Swan
Michelle Williams – Blue Valentine

Thoughts: Thank goodness, Natalie deserves it so much, this was her award to win and I’m glad she got it. No Annette Bening, it was Portman’s year – hell yes! I’m so incredibly excited and happy she won, congrats!

SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Winner! Christian BaleThe Fighter
John Hawkes – Winter’s Bone
Jeremy Renner – The Town
Mark Ruffalo – The Kids Are All Right
Geoffrey RushThe King’s Speech

Thoughts: I thought Bale deserved this the moment I walked out of The Fighter, I’m happy to see him win!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Amy Adams – The Fighter
Helena Bonham Carter – The King’s Speech
Winner! Melissa Leo – The Fighter
Hailee Steinfeld – True Grit
Jacki Weaver – Animal Kingdom

Thoughts: Totally expected and yet also totally deserving. Leo was incredible and I’m glad she won for this.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
Mike LeighAnother Year
Scott Silver & Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson – The Fighter
Christopher Nolan – Inception
Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg – The Kids Are All Right
Winner! David Seidler – The King’s Speech

Thoughts: Very same thoughts as Aaron Sorkin below. The writers winners’ speeches are always fun to hear.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy – 127 Hours
Winner! Aaron Sorkin – The Social Network
Michael Arndt – Toy Story 3
Joel Coen & Ethan Coen – True Grit
Debra Granik & Anne Rosellini – Winter’s Bone

Thoughts: Expected but deserving, as seems to be the big trend tonight. But hell yea go Sorkin, a great win!

ANIMATED FEATURE:
How to Train Your Dragon
The Illusionist
Winner! Toy Story 3

Thoughts: All three of the films nominated this year were fantastic, even How to Train Your Dragon, but as always, Pixar wins again. Though Toy Story 3 deserved it anyway. It IS also nominated for Best Picture, too!

Dogtooth (Greece)
Winner! In a Better World (Denmark)
Incendies (Canada)
Outside the Law (Algeria)

CINEMATOGRAPHY:
Matthew Libatique – Black Swan
Winner! Wally Pfister – Inception
Danny Cohen – The King’s Speech
Jeff Cronenweth – The Social Network
Roger Deakins – True Grit

Thoughts: YES! Congrats – finally the first awesome, deserving win of the night. This is Wally Pfister’s first Oscar and its been a longtime coming, he really deserves this. I’m so happy to see Inception win an Oscar!

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE:
Exit Through the Gift Shop
Gasland

Na Wewe
Wish 143

VISUAL EFFECTS:
Alice in Wonderland
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Hereafter
Winner! Inception
Iron Man 2

Thoughts: Wow awesome, this is definitely deserved, Inception had some amazingly seamless visual effects. Though I am starting to wonder if Inception is winning all of the technical categories as a way of say “sorry we didn’t nominated Chris Nolan for Best Director” because damnit, he needs to get nominated if his own film wins this many! We’ve only got another few years to wait for the chance to hit the Oscars again – right?

ART DIRECTION:
Winner! Alice in Wonderland
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Inception
The King’s Speech
True Grit

Thoughts: Whoa – what? Really? Not that it was bad, but out of all the other nominees? What the heck? I guess the Academy really loves the Tim Burton’s crazy worlds. Not that great of a win, honestly, but oh well.

COSTUME DESIGN:
Winner! Alice in Wonderland
I Am Love
The King’s Speech
The Tempest
True Grit

Thoughts: Costume and make-up were announced together and I honestly don’t have much to say about either, they were both wins I expected to see coming. As I said before, the Academy really loves Tim Burton.

MAKEUP:
Barney’s Version
The Way Back
Winner! The Wolfman

FILM EDITING:
Black Swan
The Fighter
The King’s Speech
127 Hours

Winner! The Social Network

Thoughts: Awesome, another great win for The Social Network. This is one of those categories that some say TSN should win simply because of the monumental task of sorting out Fincher’s hundreds of takes.

SOUND MIXING:
Winner! Inception
The King’s Speech
Salt
The Social Network
True Grit

Thoughts: Good, I love Inception, but why not The Social Network? That had amazing mixing – club scene?!

SOUND EDITING:
Winner! Inception
Toy Story 3
Tron Legacy
True Grit
Unstoppable

Thoughts: “I owe this 1000% to Chris Nolan.” Another solid award for Inception, it did have great sound.

ORIGINAL SCORE:
John Powell – How to Train Your Dragon
Hans Zimmer – Inception
Alexandre Desplat – The King’s Speech
A.R. Rahman – 127 Hours
Winner! Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross – The Social Network

Thoughts: YES!! Everyone though one of the more conventional scores was going to win this year, but nope, the most original and Oscar-worthy score of all actually won it. Congrats, it’s definitely a score for the ages!!

ORIGINAL SONG:
“Coming Home” from Country Strong
“I See the Light” from Tangled
“If I Rise” from 127 Hours
Winner! “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3 by Randy Newman

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
Winner! Francis Ford Coppola

What do you think of the winners so far? How is the ceremony going with Ricky Gervais hosting the second year in a row? Are the winners tonight an early indicator for the Oscars? What film(s) are you rooting for?

Altogether not a bad year, honestly this was mostly what I expected, give or take Paul Giamatti winning for Best Actor and In a Better World for Best Foreign Film. Otherwise, I’m happy to see David Fincher finally win and The Social Network take home so many awards, and I’m especially excited for Natalie Portman and Colin Firth both wining, as I wanted them to win the moment I stepped out of both of those films. So what do you think – will The King’s SpeechThe Social Network take the Oscar next?

The Movie Scoop’s Oscar Predictions

Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 25th. So, just so I can say “I told you so” later, I’m releasing my Oscar picks a few weeks early. No offense meant to my movie critic brethren, but generally speaking most movie critics are kinda nerdy and go for the obvious high brow choices at Oscar time. So, I’ll give you two picks in the major categories. One will be the obvious Oscar choice and the other will be my personal choice. Let’s begin with best movie.

My Choice: The Fighter with Mark Wahlberg. A great true story about a boxer seeking redemption. The fight scenes are the most realistic I’ve ever seen in a boxing movie.
Oscar goes to: The Social Network. The before mentioned nerds will go for this true “geek tragedy”. It’s about a college genius who starts the largest and most successful social network in the world just so he can meet a girl.

Best Actor:
My Choice: James Franco in 127 Hours. Franco plays a hiker who has to choose between dying trapped in a cave or hacking off his own arm to survive. Franco carries the entire movie on his shoulders with an incredible character study on courage and will to survive.
Oscar pick: Colin Firth in The King’s Speech. A very poignant story of an Englishman who overcame severe stammering to become the King of England.

Best Actress:
My Choice: Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone. She plays a 17 year old girl who has to track down her father or risk losing her family’s home, which was put up as collateral for his bail.
Oscar Winner: Natalie Portman in The Black Swan. She plays the kind of dark and tortured character that Oscar voters love.

Best Director:
My Choice: Danny Boyle for 127 Hours. He takes a very dark subject and relies heavily on one actor to tell an amazing story. Warning: the scene with Franco cutting off his own arm will make you sick, but it’s balanced with the story of this hero’s incredible will to survive.
And The Oscar goes to…David Fincher for The Social Network. Once again I attribute the Oscar win to “the nerd effect”.

So there you have it; my take on this year’s Oscar race. I’ll be back in the theater soon picking out the gems for you and steering you safely away from the stinkers. The Oscar’s air February 27th on ABC TV.
