Mark down June 4th in your calendar now. That’s when Vincenzo Natali’s grotesquely brilliant creature-feature Splice will hit theaters. Splice is the film that came out of Sundance with some big buzz for being so crazy and twisted and awesome all at once (read Brandon’s review). It ended up selling to Joel Silver’s Dark Castle Entertainment, which has a first look deal with Warner Bros, for a $25 million+ P&A commitment (as reported via Deadline). The release date was just listed by Box Office Mojo (via Collider) and seems to be the “wide summer release on 3,000 screens” that Nikki Finke was talking about. This movie is going to be big.
I think it’s safe to assume that other studios have been looking for their own indie horror film to turn into a Paranormal Activity-like success, but there’s not many that are that good and can be successfully marketed to a wide audience. Given the rather edgy nature of Splice, I don’t think it’ll have an extremely wide appeal, but it definitely will hit big once people get a taste of the marketing that I’m sure the folks at Warner Bros are currently cooking up. The moment Splice ended, I immediately knew that it could be a huge hit, as long as it ended up in the right hands. I guess we’ll find out on June 4th if this is the next big horror hit or not.
