Wes Craven Might Be Directing a Film Called ‘Sunflower’ Next
Another new horror project for Wes Craven? Bloody-Disgusting is reporting on a tip they received saying that Craven might direct a film called Sunflower written by Misha Green (“Sons of Anarchy”, “Heroes”). The horror film “follows a woman on the verge of running away from her life is uprooted when a seemingly straight-faced professor abducts her forcing to play a part in his twisted world.” Sounds kind of interesting. There’s no official confirmation on this yet, and BD reminds us that Craven could be directing Scream 4 in the next few months. Could he do both of these projects? Which one will he end up directing in the end?
I did a quick search and found quite a bit of info about Sunflower. The script was very high up on the 2008 Black List, which is always a good sign. All of the loglines for it have been pretty vague (“two young women struggle to escape from the clutches of a deranged college professor”) but I found a review on ScriptShadow of the script from last year that has more about what actually happens in it. Here’s what he says about it:
“Sunflower is about a guy keeping a girl hostage in a farm house out in the middle of nowhere. He’s rigged the place with Level 16 super high tech security so that when he leaves for work there’s no way for her to escape… Then kidnaps a second girl who he imprisons along with the first. He makes it quite obvious that only one of these girls is staying for the longhaul… It becomes about two girls fighting each other for their lives… the story never slows down. It’s awesome.”
So it actually sounds like a pretty awesome script – which is why I want Craven to direct it. Sunflower is in development at Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and they’re usually pretty good about getting projects into production sooner than later. Between this and Scream 4 I think I prefer that Craven direct something original and unique like Sunflower next rather than heading back to an old franchise. But Scream 4 is going to get made whether I like it or not, so maybe it’s a better idea that Craven direct that sequel. Why can’t he do both of these movies? Anyway, this still isn’t confirmed, but it seems like it could be Craven’s next project following that other horror film he finished, My Soul to Take (when is that coming?). We’ll let you know!
